Painted Faces by L.H. Cosway

Not everything has to be black or white, manly man or girly girl….

Freda most certainly doesn’t see herself as a girly girl. And she says it like she sees it. When a new neighbor moves into the apartment next to her, she assumes Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome will just be after her roommate. Instead, it is Freda herself Nicholas takes a liking to. He invites Freda into his world of cabaret. But while Nicholas shines when he is standing in the spotlight, he also battles his demons when the lights turn off.

This is one of my all time favorite contemporary romance novels. It’s different, witty, funny, sexy, tragic, and full of feels. I was very excited when the audiobook came out and…. I don’t want to say I was disappointed because that would be too negative. L.H. Cosway hasn’t published a lot of audiobooks and I would like to see more of her books narrated. Also, Ali Coffey has a very interesting voice and I wholeheartedly approve of finding voice actors who actually have the same accent as the character(s) they read. BUT…. she doesn’t seem to have a lot of practice as a voice actor, or maybe she doesn’t like the book so much. She has a tendency to rush over entire passages instead of giving you the opportunity to really get into what’s happening. She also falls into a melody every now and then or abruptly ends a passage. There isn’t much difference between each character’s voice either. It’s really a shame because this is a must-know for every adventurous romance reader.

The journey of Freda and Nicholas is really a special one. So, just trust me here, let me not give you spoilers and just listen to or read it!

The book is technically stand-alone, however, L.H. Cosway also wrote a book from Nicholas’ point of view, Killer Queen.
