Mini Reviews: Follow Even the Witch

Lovely Audiobooks mini reviews

Today’s mini reviews have absolutely no theme. They are all over the place because I’ve picked up books all over the place. I again have been listening much faster than I could review so here’s another round of mini reviews.

Follow me back**

Overall this is an enjoyable and entertaining audiobook. That is mostly down to the amazing Andi Arndt and Joe Arden who are among my favourite narrators. The story itself has many great elements that hit you right in the feels. Yet that makes the bad bits all the more disappointing. This could have been so great. But Kale, the male protagonist, is so wrapped up in himself which isn’t particularly attractive, especially when it goes as far as it does in this book. I’m all for angsty New Adult, but in an adult Romance, angst usually just makes the character look immature and unsexy.

The Dragonian’s Witch**

This was a random Audible Romance Package pick. It was my first time with this kind of sci-fi-ish fantasy story and I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. The main character Freyja and her love interest the Dragonian Prince are very interesting and complex. The concepts of magic and creatures are great and I was intrigued by the world. This still isn’t my go-to genre, but I will definitely listen to the second part of this duet. I would already have done so since it ends on a cliffhanger but, sadly, the second part isn’t in the Romance Package. I will buy it when I activate my KU subscription again. After part one I would definitely recommend this duet to anyone who likes Fantasy/Paranormal Romance!

Even the Score**

This is an absolute must if you have a Kindle Unlimited subscription. It’s a “Read and Listen for free” with two fantastic narrators. Christian Fox and Lucy Rivers should be considered heavy-hitters. They both do immensely enjoyable narrations with easily distinguishable voices and a captivating style.

The story is great. There’s love, sex and intrigue. But never over the top. It tugs at your heartstrings how this wonderful single dad is so insightful when considering his work-life-balance. Or rather: his kids-work-balance. And on the other side we have the bad-ass woman working in a man’s world who struggles with her vulnerability. I found both characters so likeable. Not everything they do is the perfect decision. But both try hard. Their motives make sense and they feel like real people. I missed them a little after finishing the story. I happily would have listened to their HEA for another hour or two.

Bombshell: Adult Problems…

Bombshell audiobook cover

Review: Bombshell (Hollywood A-List Book 1)

by CD Reiss
narrated by Andi Arndt and Christian Fox

Pick it up on Amazon**

I wanted to check out a book by CD Reiss and came across this one. While I was initially unsure whether this would be a book for me, I was hooked immediately by the unexpectedly jaded tone! Despite reading the publisher’s summary I kind of kept assuming that the term “bombshell” would refer to a woman. But it really doesn’t. Instead a little girl is in the center of this love story.

Let’s do a list today:

  • Brad: We have a super hot successful hero who sleeps around BUT he is not your typical alpha. I found him to be not alpha-like at all actually, just a guy who happens to be a superstar.
  • Cara: The heroine is very independent, professional and controlled. She appears kind of broken, BUT she never makes the stupid decisions just to prove her independence.
  • HEA: Bonus-points for not having a surprise-pregnancy! I know it’s romantic and swoony but this book felt quite raw and I appreciated that it stayed true to itself.

The story isn’t fluffy. Instead the book is packed full with captivating plotlines with many twists and turns and the characters all have a detailed background and history. For a little while in the beginning I wasn’t sure whether I could “fall for” Brad since he has a lot of flaws. I can’t pinpoint what exactly made me root for him. Most likely his PoV chapters lead to it because they give a very good insight into his thoughts and feelings which felt real and complex. Not to mention that he has a secret that makes him feel insecure.

This was my first time with Christian Fox in my ear and I can say that he’s a fantastic male romance narrator! You might know that I’m insanely critical of accents (better none than a fake one), but his slight southern lilt (at least that’s what it sounded to me as a non-American) was very nice to listen to. His voices were very good and his intonations pulled me in solidly. It was really a captivating narration.

As for Cara… I’ve come to be quite the Andi Arndt fan. She always gets to me and in this story, too, she manages to portray a complex woman with whom I can empathize. Cara is a great mix of wild child and detached professional. She is a nanny to the rich and famous and while she’s always sweet with the children, she turns entirely cold when dealing with the adults. I also appreciated how Cara didn’t play coy. She wanted Brad, he wanted her, and while that went against her rules (“Don’t do things that get you on the front page of a magazine!”) she just went and did it! You go girl 🙂

Now, back to Andi Arndt, she has become one of my favourite narrators because of her ability to make her characters truly three-dimensional. Speaking generally and not specifically about this book, I believe she can often make plot developments more understandable because of the way she sets the scene with the character’s feelings. Reading a book myself I might think, “urgh, what a stupid decision, why did she go and do that now?” while in the audiobook I feel so hurt and broken with the character that decisions now make sense. Nevertheless, Cara clearly comes across as an entirely different person to, for example, Bianca. That’s great voice-acting right there.

I really had a fantastic time listening to this audiobook. That’s what I choose romance for, that feeling of a story tugging at my heart. And this one truly did that.

So, all things considered, I can wholeheartedly recommend this audiobook! It is actually part of Kindle Unlimited, so no reason not to pick it up right now and give it a try 🙂

Publisher’s summary

Hollywood bad boy Brad Sinclair always gets his way, whether it’s the role he wants or the bikini-clad model he has to have. But when a bombshell gets dropped in his lap in the form of a dimpled five-year-old from a forgotten relationship, he knows his life is about to change forever.
Cara DuMont isn’t exactly thrilled when she gets assigned to be the nanny for the latest box-office king. She has one rule: no celebrity fathers, especially single ones with devilish good looks and rock-hard abs.
But as soon as Cara meets Brad and his adorable little girl, she knows she’s in for a world of trouble. Because there’s something about the way Brad looks at her that makes her believe that some rules are meant to be broken…
