Let’s start with the most important bit: I could honestly have Jeremy York in my ear all day. This audiobook was really good fun on every level.

You might or might not know that I always listen with the critical ear of a feminist, so I usually steer clear of pure male PoV romance. But I wanted another Rachel Van Dyken book from KU and this is where I landed. No regrets!!

Rachel Van Dyken is really good at writing guys’ inner monologues. Sometimes in romance I have encountered male PoV chapters from other authors that just didn’t feel right; two-dimensional cardboard-characters who would only think about sex alternating with caveman-esque “must make woman mine”. Ian, protagonist of “The Matchmaker’s Playbook”, feels like a real guy though. He is confident but he also has those dark corners of his mind that he rather steers clear of because he’s been through some tough times.
Overall the storyline is pretty harmless and predictable, of course Ian falls for the one girl who initially rejects him. But this novel is simply really good at what it is. It’s a fun, light-hearted rom-com read with just the right amount of darker aspects to be compelling. It also felt really good to see the cocky player wallowing in his heartache.
Now, as for my feminist ear: there is some slut-shaming and basically, women looking for guys are divided into “the stupid ones” and “the sad ones”, with the stupid ones being the ones for one-night-stands. The sad ones are the girls Ian wants to teach in Wingmen Inc.. He wants them to learn how to get the guy they want/deserve for a long-term committed relationship. Overall the tone towards women is respectful and fair and I didn’t think there was a real deal breaker in there. And I liked Ian’s reasons for starting Wingmen Inc.
This was my first time listening to Jeremy York. He is an absolutely fantastic narrator! I loved his voice and the intonations made the story captivating. Sometimes I couldn’t fully distinguish between the male characters in a dialogue, but generally he’s good at different voices and the female voices were also nice.
When I picked this book up, I wasn’t aware that it is “a big deal”. Firstly, there is the Kindle-in-motion e-book edition. I only checked the preview and it wasn’t for me. The characters looked wrong and it seemed a bit silly. But it’s there if you want to check it out. Secondly, there is an actual movie. The trailer looked very promising and I will definitely watch it.
So, if you have a KU subscription, I recommend you pick this audiobook up! I don’t think you’ll regret it either.

Publisher’s summary

Wingman rule number one: don’t fall for a client. After a career-ending accident, former NFL recruit Ian Hunter is back on campus – and he’s ready to get his new game on. As one of the masterminds behind Wingmen Inc. , a successful and secretive word-of-mouth dating service, he’s putting his extensive skills with women to work for the lovelorn. But when Blake Olson requests the services of Wingmen Inc. , Ian may have landed his most hopeless client yet.

From her frumpy athletic gear to her unfortunate choice of footwear, Blake is going to need a miracle if she wants to land her crush. At least with a professional matchmaker by her side she has a fighting chance. Ian knows that his advice and a makeover can turn Blake into another successful match. But as Blake begins the transformation from hot mess to smokin’ hot, Ian realizes he’s in danger of breaking his cardinal rule….

I would have liked a bit more fooling around before they went “all the way”. It’s a pet peeve of mine.
