Here’s something many book lovers don’t realize: Kindle Unlimited audiobooks literally use the same app as Audible subscriptions. Same narrators, same quality, same listening experience. But that’s where the similarities end! You’re choosing between completely different libraries with totally different content focuses.

The “Same App” Surprise
When you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, those “read and listen for free” audiobooks literally appear in your Audible app. You’re not downloading a separate app or getting inferior quality.
It’s the exact same professional narration you’d get by buying this audiobook on Audible.
The difference? You’re not choosing between different apps or audio quality. You’re choosing between two completely different unlimited libraries that happen to share the same excellent app and make up a small part of the Audible catalog as a whole.

The Smart Move: Try Both Kindle Unlimited and Audible!
Since both services offer 30-day free trials, the smartest approach is to test them yourself. Your reading taste matters more than any comparison chart. And you will quickly see what I mean by “different content”.
Start with the one that sounds more appealing, then try the other. Many audiobook lovers end up taking turns or outright keeping both. KU for the full novel-length experience, Audible for the audio plays and excellent productions.

Try Kindle Unlimited Free for 30 Days**
Try Audible Premium Plus Free for 30 Days** (this gives you access to the Plus catalog and a premium audiobook to keep)
Don’t get hung up on comparing features and prices, both give you unlimited audiobooks through the same excellent app. But there are profound differences in the content that quickly become apparent.
Kindle Unlimited feels like a traditional bookish experience. Audible is all about a unique audio experience.
Try both free trials and let your listening habits decide. Your perfect audiobook subscription is the one that matches your taste, not the one that looks best on paper.
Happy listening!
Eline Blackman (pronouns: she/they) fell in love with books as a child – with being read to and reading herself. 10 years ago, she bought her first Audible book. It was love at first listen! An average of 250 audiobooks per year has become the new normal and you will rarely see Eline without a wireless earbud. Romance and Fantasy are the go-to genres for this audiobook fan.
Exactly what I was looking for! Have been using KU for almost 4 years but only use it for audio (Around 800 hours a year). So torn if I should make the jump or not. I still fill in some audio from fav authors, so maybe I need to see if I can take a look at the AP library!

Thank you for your comment! So happy to hear my comparison of Kindle Unlimited vs Audible was useful for you. I hope you’ll find a lot of good audiobooks in Audible Plus 🙂
Does anyone know if this works for Amazon.ca? Cause I listen to a lot of audio books and audible is expensive so I got the free trial of KU cause I also buy Kindle books. And I don’t see audio options anywhere. I’ve read all the posts and watched videos, and the spots where they’re clicking don’t exist on my page. Maybe it’s only US?
Amazon CA doesn’t have the “add Audible narration for $$$” toggle like Amazon US and a few other countries. But when you borrow or buy a Whispersynced ebook from Amazon CA, Audible will offer you the audio version for a discounted price. So, instead of getting the Audible book directly on Amazon, you need to first get the ebook from Amazon, then the audiobook from Audible.
This answered all my questions. Thanks!!
I’m so happy to hear that! Have fun with your audiobooks 🙂
My 95 year old mother is paying for Audible premium plus, kindle unlimited and Amazon digital. She does not listen to books, only reads. What should she keep?
If she doesn’t listen to books, she doesn’t get anything out of an Audible subscription since they offer only audiobooks. Kindle Unlimited is definitely the better subscription for someone looking for ebooks!
