Mini reviews: 4 Audiobook Series with demons

Werewolves and vampires are probably the most popular fantastic creatures.

But personally, I’ve always found demons more interesting. I hope this doesn’t say anything about me 😛 [... read more]

You know how everybody is all about unicorns these days? Well, I never cared much for them growing up. But I loooved mermaids! I would eat up every mermaid fairytale and every mermaid movie. You probably don’t remember Splash with Daryl Hannah, but man, did I love that movie! Of course there was Ariel, but what really left an impression were the original fairy tales. The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen is absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful. So is the story of Loreley of the Rhine.

Alas, this was a long time ago and it never would have crossed my mind that romance and mermaids could mix. You know I like my romance novels spicy and, well… there’s that thing with mermaids where they are missing some integral “bits” for spicy 😀

Then I ran into D.B. Sieders and scored myself a review copy of “Lorelai’s Lyric”. I had no idea how that would go but got totally blown away.

This story has real depth, so let’s go bit by bit:

  1. The mermaid myths: D.B. Sieders more than did her homework, she’s clearly a total mermaid-fan. I even learned some new things (have you heard of a Melusine before?). And I loved how she used those old myths and fairy tales and wove them into the background stories of her characters.
  2. Addiction: As hinted at in the publisher’s summary, Vance, our hero, doesn’t only have vices but an actual problem. D.B. Sieders treats this with a lot of care and doesn’t fall into the trap of just letting love fix such a serious personal problem. I really liked how realistic she made Vance’s struggles and how she made appropriate space for this in a fantasy novel.
  3. Complex characters: Both Lorelei and Vance are great protagonists, strong yet vulnerable. Both are very likable and wouldn’t fit into any of the usual cut-outs. Vance is so broken yet so reflected and he makes a real effort, not only for Lorelei but also for himself. And I could truly empathize with Lorelei’s insecurities and struggles.

Now, on to the narration! I was surprised to see that this is the first Audible audiobook by Stefanie Kay. I did not expect that because this was a great narration. I’ve been listening to a lot of ARC’s lately and have encountered some really questionable productions. This one, however, was absolutely professional and top-notch both in regard to her voice acting as well as the sound quality and clarity. Honestly, I feel kind of silly writing such a gushing review. But what can I say, I simply had a wonderful time listening to this book. I like Stefanie Kay’s voices, she does really well with the males ones and with the accents. Her intonations were interesting and captivating and this will definitely be a re-read for me.

Also, have you seen the cover? This time I added the book cover instead of the cropped audiobook one because I find it so, so pretty!

Lastly, I want to say that I really digged the magical condom.  And I’m looking forward to listening to the rest of the series, especially Bruce’s story! I’m pretty sure you’ll like him, too.

So, bottom line, I wholeheartedly recommend this audiobook! If you are ready for some diversity in your Paranormal Romance, give it a try. It doesn’t always have to be vampires, y’all 😉

Publisher’s summary
If Lorelei sings, someone will die.

Her beautiful voice once cost a life. Still, music is her passion. What’s a mermaid to do? Run off and live vicariously through mortal musicians!

Unfortunately, gorgeous rocker Vance Idol almost succumbs to her siren call after his show in Nashville. Not that Vance cares – not since his girlfriend’s fatal overdose left him with a supersized death wish. Lorelei makes it her mission to undo the damage and help this talented and charismatic man on the eve of his band’s big break.

But saving a mortal man is a dangerous proposition. Lorelei could far too easily lose her heart, and quite possibly her immortality, during her American holiday. Bad boy Vance might be worth the risk.

Can their love survive his attitude, her fins, and an evil pixie with a grudge against them both?

ARC

I want to thank D.B. Sieders for providing this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review. And while I do believe that it’s only human to look more kindly on things that we’ve gotten for less money than they’re worth, my dislike of over-the-top dishonest gushing reviews is so strong, that I am convinced this review is still 100% honest and would be the same, had I bought this audiobook myself.
