Cemetery Boys

Ghost, brujos, and cemeteries await in this Young Adult Romance! Transboy Yadriel doesn’t only summon ghosts, he also falls in love with one…
Yadriel is determined to prove to his family that he’s a brujo – a male magic user in their tradition. But when he wants to summon the ghost of his cousin, he accidentally summons Julian instead, who has FEELINGS about being a ghost…
I loved how this book navigates gender in witchcraft, which is often frustratingly gender-essentialist. Yadriel’s struggle to belong and be seen for who he truly is made this story deeply moving. The atmosphere is perfectly spooky, and Avi Roque’s narration brings both the warmth and the magic to life beautifully.

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries
Heather Fawcett (Author), Ell Potter (Narrator), Michael Dodds (Narrator)

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries is a perfect choice if you are looking for Halloween audiobooks that aren’t terrifying.
This book manages to feel cozy (think rural hut, academia, bookwormery) while also featuring axe injuries and bloodied handprints on windows. And that very precisely captures how faeries are portrayed in stories: beautiful and fun, hosting feasts with candy, but also villainous and cat-like in how they toy with their prey.
The narration by Ell Potter and Michel Dodds was wonderful and really fleshed out for me how I pictured Emily and Bambleby while listening. This is an immensely enjoyable Fantasy with a slow-burn Romance that’s a great audiobook for Halloween!

Bored Gay Werewolf
Tony Santorella (Author), Anthony Nyro (Narrator)

Bored Gay Werewolf gives you a very lovable gay werewolf, but this book is far from boring! Brian accidentally got himself turned into a werewolf, which his parents don’t appreciate, especially on top of “the gay thing”.
So, he finds himself in a small apartment with a restaurant job. And when he’s not working, he gets drunk… or blacks out, shapeshifts, and does some questionable things. This book has a body count!
When Brian makes the acquaintance of another werewolf, Taylor, he’s intrigued. Taylor handles the whole shifting thing very differently from Brian and teaches him how to live his life with more purpose.
And while Brian is not entirely sold on what Taylor is trying to sell (a project that comes across a lot like a men’s rights scheme), he does appreciate getting more control over his wolf.
I found Brian and his group of human friends so lovable, and beyond the engaging werewolf adventure, this book has layers! Anthony Nyro perfectly brought out Brian’s thoughts and feelings, as well as his struggles and turned Bored Gay Werewolf into a fun Halloween audiobook!

The One and Only Crystal Druid
Annette Marie (Author), Cris Dukehart (Narrator)

Halloween is the perfect time to dive into Annette Marie’s Guild Codex world! And the Guild Codex Unveiled series gives us some particularly spooky audiobooks.
It starts with The One and Only Crystal Druid, in which the titular hero and the knife-wielding witchy heroine meet for the first time. This book – or rather these two characters – have incredible Chaotic Neutral energy!
The only reason Zak and Saber don’t make a truly frightening pair is that neither plays well with others. These two are such unique characters, and Cris Dukeheart did a wonderful job with their voices and the creepy atmosphere in this book.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches
Sangu Mandanna (Author), Samara MacLaren (Narrator)

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is a wonderfully cozy found-family story with a lovely romance and three very explosive witch children!
If you prefer your Halloween audiobooks to be less creepy and more weird (or should I say, irregular?), you will have such a wonderful time with Mika Moon and the people from Nowhere House.
I loved listening to Samara MacLaren read this heartwarming, captivating story about finding a place to belong – even if you’re a witch.

The (Most Unusual) Haunting of Edgar Lovejoy
Roan Parrish (Author), Dani Martineck (Narrator)

This Paranormal Romance gave me the perfect Halloween vibes: Edgar can see ghosts – and he’s terrified of them (… understandable, Edgar!)
So naturally, he falls for Jamie, a professional haunter who builds elaborate horror houses to scare people. Not exactly the perfect match for someone who frightens so easily.
And I just loved how this book balances the sweetness of Edgar and Jamie figuring out their relationship with genuinely creepy ghost descriptions. Edgar’s journey to accept that living a full life means dealing with his anxiety (and his ghost problem) felt real and moving (I can’t quite relate to the ghost problem, but I can relate to the anxiety problem).
Dani Martineck brought both characters’ emotions to life perfectly. A wonderfully spooky Romance set against the atmospheric backdrop of New Orleans during Halloween!

The Witch King Duology
H.E. Edgmon (Author), Dani Martineck (Narrator)
Get the Audible book**

The Witch King duology is a gritty Fantasy that follows a trans guy who’s dodged his fated mate for years – until he’s pulled back into the fae world that looks down on witches like him.
This is such a profound, beautiful story of second chances that moved me deeply, but The Witch King and The Fae Keeper are also two really fun and super entertaining books that make perfect Halloween audiobooks!
Dani Martineck is one of my favorite narrators, and this time of year is perfect to give Wyatt and his friends a listen.

Gideon the Ninth
Tamsyn Muir (Author), Moira Quirk (Narrator)

If you haven’t listened to this one yet, you’re in for a treat! Gideon the Ninth is science fantasy, and the titular heroine might be one of the most badass people in all of literature!
Do I have a giant crush on Gideon? Yes, yes, I do. But that’s beside the point. With its necromancers, mysterious murders, and a house that seems to be made entirely of dungeons, this really is the perfect spooky audiobook for Halloween!
Moira Quirk is one of the best audiobook narrators out there and did an amazing job bringing the atmosphere and this unique cast of characters to life.

Mere Mortals
Erin Jade Lange (Author), Jesse Vilinsky (Narrator)
Get the Audible book**

Two vampire siblings get “sentenced to life” after an accident with a human, meaning they’re turned back into normal teenagers and have to deal with zits, high school, and all the mortal drama.
Of course, their entire focus is taken up by trying to get their sentence revoked and being turned vampire again. But some distracting boys enter the picture.
I adored Charlie’s growth throughout the book, how she starts out as a vapid fashionista and then gains more insight into who she is and what matters to her and her brother. A very captivating story, and I loved Jesse Vilinsky’s narration!

The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings
Lily Morton (Author), Joel Leslie (Narrator)
Get the Audible book in a deal**
The ghosts in this book are no joke, I can tell you that! But Blue Billings and Levi Blake are wonderful together. And the audiobook is narrated by Joel Leslie, who is always such a treat to listen to!
This paranormal M/M Romance set in a haunted house is the perfect mix of adorable romantic pining and genuinely creepy ghost story!
Blue runs haunted house tours, which is already the most perfect Halloween job imaginable. When Levi moves into a house on Blue’s tour – adoring Blue from afar – you just have to root for them. But the ghost in this house? Yikes! I was genuinely on the edge of my seat during the spooky parts.
The balance between “aww, Levi is so gone for Blue” and “wait, that ghost is ACTUALLY terrifying” is perfect.

Ravenfall

Ravenfall by Kalyn Josephson drew me in right away. It’s a Middle-Grade book with pretty creepy vibes, set in a wonderful magical town. I loved the descriptions of the inn and the stores, and how people with magic hide in plain sight from normal tourists there, thinking they found the perfect Halloween town.
The heroine Annabella is 13, and like most people in her family, she’s psychic. Her gift? She can see deaths that other people have witnessed. She finally gets the opportunity to put her ability to good use when a boy comes to her family’s inn whose parents were murdered.
And Annabella had recently touched someone who had seen their deaths! Now she wants to help the boy find his parents’ killers. Keylor Leigh and Michael Crouch brought this story to life so well and have very fitting voices for the kids. A great listen for October!

The Book of Witches

If you enjoy anthology audiobooks, I recommend The Book of Witches! You can find stories and poems here from around the world as well as from a variety of different backgrounds.
Some of them are more Urban Fantasy, while others create elaborate Fantasy worlds with just a few words. I was instantly hooked!
The group of voice actors was incredibly well chosen, making this a wonderful listening experience and a great audiobook to start your Halloween-themed listening.

The Twenty-Sided Sorceress
Annie Bellet (Author), Folly Blaine (Narrator)

Jade Crow runs a small gaming and comic store in a supernatural town in Idaho. She is also a sorceress, but, shhh, no one is supposed to know that because sorcerers are feared for their heart-eating ways!
So she never uses her magic… until she gets entangled in all kinds of adventures.
I love this Urban Fantasy series and how Folly Blaine brought these characters to life! It’s not super creepy, but spooky enough with quite a few monsters. And the heart-eating, obviously…

Happy listening!
Eline Blackman (pronouns: she/they) fell in love with books as a child – with being read to and reading herself. 11 years ago, she bought her first Audible book. It was love at first listen! An average of 200 audiobooks per year has become the new normal, and you will rarely see Eline without a wireless earbud. Romance and Fantasy are the go-to genres for this audiobook fan.

Ouh- quite the nice selection!
I haven’t yet found a good horror book for me, so I do appreciate this list having anything but! I know I sure forget that there’s not only horror that’s suiting for halloween 😅

Thank you, Flora! There are some of my all-year favorites on this list, haha. Definitely check out Kraken and The Affair of the Mysterious Letter. I think you might enjoy those if you liked OatEotL and Twenty-Sided Sorceress 🙂
