If you’re in the mood for an Urban Fantasy series with a strong female lead, look no further than Seanan McGuire’s October Daye books. This is one of my favorite book series of all time!

October is a half-elf private detective who is constantly getting herself into sticky situations but always manages to come out on top (eventually). Also, for some reason, someone always tries to stab her with a knife. It’s a whole thing!

Whether it’s having coffee with the Luidaeg or going toe-to-toe with faerie royalty, October’s adventures are wild and always have me on the edge of my seat!

She’s just so damn lovable!

The audiobook version is narrated by the incredibly gifted Mary Robinette Kowal, who brings each character to life in a way that will have you hooked from the very first moment.

You already know and love October Daye and are looking for similar Urban Fantasy books? Then Kate Kane, Paranormal Investigator, is your gal!

If someone goes missing or unalived in the underworld of London’s supernatural community, Kate is there. Not always voluntarily, but somehow she tends to end up in the thick of it.

I adore the dark humor in this fast-paced, entertaining series of Urban Fantasy books!

Also, there will be plenty of hot romances along the way! Kate might not have found her one true love yet, but she sure finds a lot of women to keep her bed warm. Or their’s. Wait, can vampires even keep a bed warm?

Anyway, on Audible, you can enjoy Kate’s first three adventures through the brilliant narration of Cat Gould. The fourth book is narrated by Henrietta Meire who did just as great a job with the continuation!

Annette Marie has created an amazing universe with The Guild Codex series! And you can choose from four different series to step into this world.

While each series itself should be read in chronological order, you don’t necessarily have to start with The Guild Codex: Spellbound series. You can find a recommended reading order for all 19 books on the author’s website. But the series are built in a way that you can start with Spellbound, Demonized, Unveiled, or Warped. Whichever you find particularly appealing!

The Unveiled and Warped series are not yet finished. Spellbound and Demonized are completed.

At the core of The Guild Codex are the guilds and the system that governs people with magical abilities so normal humans will not find out about them and are protected from the supernatural. Of course, there are also the rogues who illegally refuse to belong to any guild…

These Urban Fantasy books on Audible are narrated by Cris Dukeheart and Iggy Toma, with teddy Hamilton and Tim Campbell supporting in some of the audiobooks. The narration is absolutely wonderful and Cris Dukeheart manages to bring out the unique personalities of each of Annette Marie’s heroines perfectly, while Iggy Toma is fantastic in the Warped series.

In Tracy Deonn’s Legendborn, sixteen-year-old Bree uncovers a hidden world of magic she never thought was possible.

After her mother’s unexpected death, Bree is drawn to a secret society that trains students to fight supernatural creatures. As Bree delves deeper into this magical world, she uncovers secrets about her family and herself that challenge everything she thought was true.

Legendborn’s characters and the fascinating world based on the Kind Arthur myth absolutely drew me in and haven’t let me go ever since!

Fortunately, the second book in the series, Bloodmarked, will be out in November 2022!

The audiobook version narrated by Joniece Abbott-Pratt brings the story to life so well and pulls you into the emotional turmoil and the exciting adventures that Bree has to go through!

While Legendborn is considered Young Adult Fantasy, it is also very much an Urban Fantasy book, and one of the best there is!

Nate Garrett is a sorcerer trying to get his memories back. Turns out… he’s much older than he thought. And much more powerful! And there are a lot of things he needs to take care of…

The Hellequin Chronicles by Steve McHugh are such great Urban Fantasy books with – deservedly – many fans! Nate and his friends, as well as his enemies (especially Mordred), are all very interesting, real, and complex characters.

The Hellequin World is built around the Arthur, Merlin, and Avalon myth. The original book series is finished, but it’s followed by a spin-off series, The Avalon Chronicles, and is continued in The Rebellion Chronicles which follows the same main characters.

All audiobooks in the Hellequin world are included in Kindle Unlimited which means you can go ahead and binge-listen to all of these wonderful Urban Fantasy books with their badass main characters, fun banter, wonderful narrators, and breathtaking adventures!

If Urban Fantasy books are your thing, you absolutely cannot miss out on Ilona Andrews! My favorite series of this author couple is The Innkeeper Chronicles, a mix of Urban Fantasy with a splash of Science Fiction.

This series follows Dina who must protect her magical Inn and its guests from supernatural dangers from space.

This series was one of my first in the genre and with its very compelling main characters and storyline, it’s still an absolute favorite!

And I was more than thrilled when Graphic Audio is released brand-new productions of these brilliant Urban Fantasy books in 2022. All currently available five books are already out and I absolutely adore them!

With a full cast and sound effects, this really brings Ilona Andrew’s world to life! The narrators are all wonderful and have such fitting voices for their characters.

Also, the argument between the werewolf and the vampire about which type of supernatural creatures human women prefer will never not crack me up!

Wings of Ebony

Wings of Ebony audiobook cover showing a Black girl pulling a black cowl over her head

By: J. Elle
Narrated by: Bahni Turpin

The Wings of Ebony duology by J. Elle are thrilling Urban Fantasy books following Rue, a teenage girl who knows how difficult it is to live in the US as a Black person.

But then she gets pulled into a manipulative magical community, entirely made up of white people, with the exception of Rue’s dad whom she has never met before.

Rue uncovers a horrible crime while exploring her own abilities and protecting her younger sister.

The Wings of Ebony duology is dark and gritty and absolutely compelling! The audiobooks are narrated by Bahni Turpin and I couldn’t put my earbuds down. She’s one of the best audiobook narrators out there and brings out all the emotions in this story while giving each character a distinct voice.

Monkey Around

Monkey Around by Jadie Jang

By: Jadie Jang
Narrated by: Michelle Schechter

Get the Audible book on Amazon**

Urban Fantasy books come in all shapes and sizes, with a wide array of characters and supernatural abilities. Monkey Around manages to be very different from many other books in the genre, and yet exactly scratch that Urban Fantasy itch!

As the title might have made you suspect, this book (that is currently, unfortunately, still a stand-alone and not a series yet) features a protagonist who can shapeshift into a monkey.

Maya is a real trickster who doesn’t take herself seriously at all. She enjoys messing with people a bit which makes this story so much fun! But she doesn’t joke when it comes to her work for the supernatural community and protecting others.

Michelle Schechter’s narration brings the story to life so well, maintaining a lighthearted tone while also adding depth to the very dark problems Maya has to deal with. If you’re looking for an entertaining Urban Fantasy book with a unique twist, Monkey Around is definitely worth checking out!

Old World

Dead Spots audiobook cover showing a white woman with brown hair walking along a dark alley

By: Melissa F. Olson
Narrated by: Amy McFadden, Kate Rudd
Books in Series: 11

Listen for free with Kindle Unlimited**

If you love the concept of different series set in an ever-expanding world, you need to check out Melissa F. Olsen’s Old World!

Scarlett Bernard is a “null”, she is like a black hole for magic and deactivates anything magical in her vicinity. This makes her uniquely qualified for her job as a supernatural crime scene cleaner! Whenever a vampire, werewolf, or witch commits a crime or has an accident, Scarlett sees to it that the secret world of the supernaturals isn’t revealed to the humans.

Melissa F. Olsen continues to write in this world in different series focusing on either Scarlett Bernard or Lex who is a boundary witch using a kind of death magic. You can find the recommended reading order on the author’s website.

Amy McFadden narrates the Scarlett Bernard and Disrupted Magic series. Kate Rudd narrates the Boundary Magic audiobooks about Lex. Both narrators are great, with captivating intonations and a range of different character voices!

The Imp Series by Debra Dunbar

A Demon Bound audiobook cover showing a smirking white woman with black hair and black leathry wings holding a fire ball (Urban Fantasy books with a Demon main character)

By: Debra Dunbar
Narrated by: Angela Rysk
Books in Series: 11

Meet middle-aged Samantha who is crushing on her very young, very hunky neighbor. But wait, there’s more! Sam actually happens to be an imp, a lower-class demon from Hel who came to Earth for an extended vacation.

Then things happen and – without wanting to give too much away – our little imp finds herself with much more responsibility than she cares to take on.

I have listened to these audiobooks countless times because they are so thoroughly entertaining! They have unexpected twists and turns, the entire range from light to dark emotions, amazing banter, and some very pointed social criticism.

All of it through the eyes of Sam, who doesn’t ever take anything all that seriously but still loves with her whole heart.

The audiobook narration by Angela Rysk is absolutely fantastic! It’s so funny and captivating. I’ve had many laughing-out-loud moments and a fair share of “aww”-moments on top of it. And Angela Rysk also has the sexiest male voices. I absolutely love Debra Dunbar’s Urban Fantasy books with all my heart!

The Venom Trilogy

Venom & Vanilla audiobook cover showing a white woman in a leather shirt surrounded by purple magic

By: Shannon Mayer
Narrated by: Saskia Maarleveld
Books in Series: 3 (Completed)

Listen for free with Kindle Unlimited**

The Venom Trilogy’s heroine isn’t your usual snarky, cussing, disillusioned badass. Instead, all Alena wanted was a happy marriage and her bakery. And I found her utterly charming and likable!

The start is very dark and sad. But it doesn’t take long for Alena’s strength of character to shine through. And that’s what I appreciated so much about her! Everybody assumes she’s a pushover, just a weak woman struggling with her religious beliefs. But her personality shows in her decisions and actions.

Overall, the story isn’t particularly dark though, no worries. And the Greek mythology aspects are awesome!

Saskia Maarleveld is absolutely wonderful to listen to. Her narrations are very captivating and make this trilogy a delight for Urban fantasy audiobook fans!

The Kara Gillian Series

Mark of the Demon audiobook cover showing green runes and the side of a white woman's face

By: Diana Rowland
Narrated by: Liv Anderson
Books in Series: 8

Get the Mark of the Demon Audible book**

If you like police procedurals, exploring new fantastic worlds, solving murders and other secrets, crushing on the wrong guy, and then finding the right one, then this series is for you!

In the earlier books, Kara Gillian, who is a cop and a demon summoner, tries to solve a gruesome murder series. Later on, the books turn more toward Fantasy when she explores the demon homeworld.

The narration by Liv Anderson is so great! She has a range of easily distinguishable voices and is very pleasant to listen to.

The very long-awaited 9th book in this series will be out in November 2022. It’s not clear right now whether there will be an Audible book of it. But even though not every plotline in this expansive story is entirely wrapped up, these Urban Fantasy books are definitely worthy of attention!
