Blair, underachieving twin sister of a supermodel, tries to finally finish something, namely her college degree. This endeavour leads her into the MMA scene and right into the arms of Ty, dark broody fighter with about as many issues as Blair.
The baggage and potential for darkness is strong in this book, yet it is almost a rom-com. In particular in the first part of the book some scenes are a little over the top for my taste (you know, spewing your beverage all over the table when you hear your grandma is getting married…. and we never actually establish why that would be this ridiculously surprising…). The story is entirely from Blair’s point of view and, despite the hysterics, I found her to be a very likable character, especially with Rebecca Snow’s narration.
Initially, I was wondering how well you could pair up a somewhat silly modern-woman rom-com girl with a super hot alpha male caveman MMA warrior. And at first, it is indeed a bit awkward. But as the story progresses, our hero grows out of his stereotype and the two end up being a very nice match.
Now, I can’t be entirely positive about the narration. There were some mouth sounds and I found that Rebecca Snow added a bit too much extra silliness to the already over the top bits in the earlier parts of the story. Nevertheless, her voice simply matched the character of Blair who is really, really likable in the laid back way she deals with her self-doubts and issues.
So overall, without being able to pinpoint the exact reason I enjoyed this audiobook and I liked it more and more the longer I listened. I suppose it’s this great mix of the story being funny and light and the characters filling out and feeling more and more real… So just listen to this book and I think in the end you will be just as happy with it as I was!
Also, I think I will check out more of L.J. Shen’s books. Apparently, her other books are darker than this one and I do like my MMA romance novels angsty 😉
